What is Traditional Foot Reflexology?

Reflexology is a complementary therapy method based on the principle that pressure applied to specific points (reflex zones) on the foot, hand and ear stimulates corresponding organs and systems.

Modern foot reflexology was popularised by Eunice Ingham (1938) in the United States; theoretical bases are similar to acupuncture but not equivalent.

Limited evidence supports stress, anxiety, headache, premenstrual symptoms and chemotherapy nausea-vomiting; high-quality evidence is limited.

Symptoms

Stress, anxiety and insomnia
Chronic tension headache
Premenstrual syndrome and dysmenorrhoea
Constipation, dyspepsia and nausea
Chronic muscle pain and fatigue
Poor circulation symptoms (cold feet)

Risk Factors

Open wound, burn and active infection on the foot
Severe peripheral neuropathy (diabetes)
Deep vein thrombosis and severe varicose vein
Bone fracture and severe foot injury
Pregnancy (especially first trimester)
Sensory blunting and neurological diseases

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Reflexology should not be considered first option for medical pathology
  • Wound, infection and DVT must be ruled out before sessions
  • When chronic illness is present, treatment plan with the physician
  • Reflexology is not recommended in pregnancy first trimester
