What is Traditional Balneotherapy and Thermal Treatment?

Balneotherapy is a treatment method that uses mineral-rich thermal waters via the routes of bath, drinking and inhalation.

Thermal water content includes chloride, sulphate, bicarbonate, sulphur, radon and CO2; therapeutic effect emerges through the combination of temperature, hydrostatic pressure and mineral content.

It has been included in European spa medicine guidelines for chronic rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic low back pain) with limited but supportive evidence.

Symptoms

Knee, hip and hand osteoarthritis
Chronic low back pain and neck pain
Fibromyalgia and chronic widespread pain
Ankylosing spondylitis and rheumatoid arthritis (in stable period)
Postoperative musculoskeletal rehabilitation
Stress, anxiety and chronic fatigue

Risk Factors

Active inflammatory disease and acute attack period
Severe cardiovascular disease (uncontrolled hypertension, heart failure)
Active infection and febrile illness
Pregnancy and severe varicose vein
Severe peripheral neuropathy (diabetes)
Open wound, ulcer and acute skin disease

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Cardiology and physiatry evaluation before treatment
  • Cardiac safety in those with high thermal water temperature (greater than 37 degrees Celsius)
  • Modified protocol in pregnancy
  • Initial physician consultation in chronic illness
