What is Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ Dysfunction)?

Temporomandibular joint disorders cover dysfunctions of the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. Disc displacement, muscular pain disorder, and degenerative joint disease are the main forms.

Stress-related teeth clenching (bruxism), malocclusion, and joint trauma are among the triggering factors. Chronic pain can also affect cervicogenic headache and neck muscles.

Since most conservative treatments yield successful results, surgery is considered as the last option.

Symptoms

Clicking, crackling, or crepitus sound in the jaw joint
Pain in front of the ear and in the jaw region
Difficulty in opening the mouth or locking
Headache radiating to the temples
Neck and shoulder muscle tension
Sense of swelling in the face

Risk Factors

Bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching)
Stress and anxiety
Trauma or strenuous dental procedures
Rheumatoid arthritis
Malocclusion (incorrect bite)
Female gender (hormonal factors)
