What is Thyroid Ultrasound?

Thyroid ultrasound is a non-radiation examination method that evaluates the thyroid gland and surrounding structures using sound waves. It detects nodules, cysts, enlargement, and inflammation.

Thyroid nodules occur in a notable portion of the population worldwide; the vast majority are benign. Ultrasound helps differentiate nodules with malignant features.

The TIRADS scoring system is used to classify nodules according to cancer risk and guides decisions on fine-needle biopsy.

Symptoms

Palpable neck mass
Thyroid hormone irregularities
Hoarseness
Difficulty swallowing
Graves disease and Hashimoto follow-up
Monitoring of nodules under follow-up

Risk Factors

History of radiation exposure
Familial thyroid cancer history
Iodine deficiency
Autoimmune diseases
Female sex
Advanced age

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Anyone noticing a new neck mass should consult a physician

  • Biopsy is planned for suspicious nodules according to TIRADS
  • Growth in follow-up nodules is clinically significant
