What is Therapeutic Embolization?

Therapeutic embolization is the introduction of materials into a vessel — coils (metallic spirals), particles (PVA), liquids (Onyx, NBCA), or glue — to occlude a target vessel.

It is used in a wide range of indications, including bleeding control (trauma, postpartum, GI), tumor shrinkage (hepatocellular carcinoma, uterine fibroids), and treatment of AVMs and aneurysms.

It is an alternative to surgery, less invasive, and offers a shorter recovery time. It requires an experienced interventional radiology team and a well-equipped center.

Symptoms

Control of traumatic bleeding
GI and pelvic bleeding
Postpartum hemorrhage
Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE)
Treatment of cerebral aneurysm and AVM
TACE/TAE for hepatocellular carcinoma

Risk Factors

Non-target embolization (embolization of the wrong vessel)
Ischemic complications
Post-embolization syndrome (pain, fever)
Contrast media reactions
Infection
Radiation exposure

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Indication for the procedure should be decided by a multidisciplinary council
  • Risks and benefits should be explained in detail during consent
  • Pain and fever after the procedure are common
  • Adherence to follow-up appointments is important

Treatment Methods

01
Catheterization of the appropriate vessel
02
Advancing a microcatheter to the target
03
Selection and delivery of the embolic agent
04
Assessment of success with control angiography
05
Post-embolization pain control and monitoring
06
Follow-up imaging to monitor recovery
