What is Tai Chi: Exercise Therapy for Fibromyalgia?

Tai chi is a traditional Chinese internal martial art and meditative exercise form. It is performed with slow, flowing movements and breath coordination. It is described as a mind-body exercise.

Randomized controlled trials in fibromyalgia have shown that tai chi produces significant improvements in the FIQ (Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire) score, pain, sleep quality, anxiety, depression, and quality of life.

A 2018 BMJ study showed that tai chi is comparable and may even be superior to aerobic exercise. Duration, frequency, and movement type determine effectiveness. A 12-week program, 2-3 sessions per week, is recommended.
