What is Stroke Rehabilitation with Robotic Exoskeleton?

Robotic exoskeletons offer high-repetition, symmetric, task-specific training opportunities by normalizing movement patterns of the paretic extremity. Lokomat (treadmill-based) for the lower extremity, and Armeo and InMotion systems for the upper extremity are the most commonly used.

EEG and EMG-based BCI (brain-computer interface) integration enhances neuroplasticity by detecting motor intent and triggering robot movement even when the patient does not initiate movement. Virtual reality increases motivation and engagement.

Meta-analyses have shown that robotic rehabilitation, when used in addition to conventional physiotherapy, provides significant improvement in gait speed, step length, and FIM scores. The greatest benefit is achieved during the subacute (3-6 months) period.

Symptoms

Subacute stroke (3-6 months)
Hemiplegia
Gait disorder
Upper extremity motor loss
Balanced rehabilitation request
Intensive therapy indication

Risk Factors

Severe cardiac instability
Pressure infection
Orthostatic hypotension
Skin integrity disorder
Fixator or prosthesis
Epilepsy (uncontrolled)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • In subacute stroke rehabilitation phase
  • When conventional PT plateaus
  • When high-intensity treatment is required
  • In need to increase motivation
  • In long-term hemiplegia rehabilitation

Treatment Methods

01
Multidisciplinary team assessment
02
Lokomat gait training
03
Armeo upper extremity training
04
Task-specific training
05
BCI and EMG biofeedback
06
Virtual reality integration
07
Conventional PT combination
08
