What is Shiatsu Massage?

Shiatsu is a pressure massage of Japanese origin applied using fingers, palms, elbows and knees. It is inspired by the concept of acupuncture meridians and is generally performed on a floor mat with the patient clothed.

The level of evidence is low to moderate, and it can be recommended as a supportive measure for muscle tension, sleep problems and stress management. Claims of treating specific diseases should be avoided.

It should be performed by a certified shiatsu practitioner or by CAM-authorized (GETAT) personnel. The technique should be adapted in pregnancy and in cancer patients.
