What is Root Canal Treatment (Detailed)?

Root canal treatment (endodontic therapy) is a procedure that removes infected or inflamed pulp tissue from inside a tooth, disinfects the canal system with mechanical instrumentation and antimicrobial irrigation, and seals it with a biocompatible filling material to preserve the natural tooth.

Modern endodontics uses rotary nickel-titanium files, electronic apex locators, ultrasonic irrigation, calcium-silicate-based sealers and CBCT for complex cases. Reported 5-year success rates exceed 90% with proper coronal restoration.

Symptoms

Spontaneous, prolonged or throbbing tooth pain
Pain on biting or chewing
Hot or cold sensitivity lasting more than 30 seconds
Tooth discoloration (gray-brown)
Localized swelling of gum, sinus tract or fistula
Tenderness on percussion or apical palpation
Radiographic periapical lesion

Risk Factors

Untreated deep dental caries
Cracked tooth or repeated trauma
Multiple large restorations on the same tooth
Bruxism with vertical fractures
Periodontitis with retrograde pulp infection
Failed previous endodontic treatment
Iatrogenic pulp exposure during restorative procedures

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Severe or persistent toothache
  • Sensitivity not relieved by removing the stimulus
  • Localized swelling or fistula on the gum
  • Discolored tooth after trauma
  • Pain on biting on a previously restored tooth
  • Radiographic finding of periapical pathology

Treatment Methods

01
Pre-operative periapical radiograph or CBCT for complex cases
02
Local anesthesia and rubber dam isolation
03
Mechanical canal preparation with rotary nickel-titanium files
04
Sodium hypochlorite, EDTA and chlorhexidine irrigation with ultrasonic activation
05
Calcium hydroxide intracanal medication when needed
06
Three-dimensional obturation with gutta-percha and bioceramic sealer
07
Coronal restoration with cusp coverage (crown or onlay)
08
Clinical and radiographic follow-up at 6-12 months

Impacted Tooth

Ağız ve Diş Sağlığı

An impacted tooth — most often a wisdom tooth — has not erupted fully and remains in the jaw bone or gum. It can lead to pericoronitis, caries and cysts.

Teeth Whitening

Ağız ve Diş Sağlığı

Teeth whitening lightens tooth color using hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide gels. In-office (professional) bleaching uses higher concentrations with light activation for faster results; home bleaching uses custom trays with lower concentrations over 1–4 weeks. Safety depends on healthy teeth, correct concentration, isolation of gums and transient sensitivity management.

Ağız ve Diş Sağlığı

Orthodontics is the dental specialty that corrects the alignment of the teeth and jaws, providing both aesthetic and functional benefits at any age, from childhood through adulthood.

Gingival Recession (Gum Recession)

Ağız ve Diş Sağlığı

Gingival recession is the apical displacement of the gingival margin with exposure of the root surface. It may be localized or generalized and results from mechanical trauma, periodontal disease, thin biotype or anatomic factors. Recession can cause root sensitivity, caries and aesthetic concerns; management includes cause elimination and surgical root coverage when indicated.
