What is Robotic Rehabilitation?

Robotic rehabilitation refers to advanced technology devices used to support patient motor learning in neurological conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and multiple sclerosis. It provides repeatable, high-intensity, and objectively measurable training to the patient.

Upper extremity robots (Armeo, InMotion, MIT-Manus, Hocoma) and lower extremity robots (Lokomat, Ekso, ReWalk) are available. Exoskeleton systems provide whole-body support to the patient and enable gait training.

Robotic rehabilitation does not replace conventional treatment but is used as a complement. It is effective for intensive, repetitive, and task-specific training, but conventional therapy is essential for transfer and functional integration.

Symptoms

Hemiparesis after stroke
Gait impairment after spinal cord injury
Incomplete spinal cord injury
Ataxic gait
Loss of upper-extremity motor control
Balance disorders

Risk Factors

Stroke (subacute-chronic)
Spinal cord injury
Traumatic brain injury
Multiple sclerosis
Cerebral palsy
Parkinson's disease

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • In neurological rehabilitation planning
  • At a plateau in conventional treatment
  • When intensive rehabilitation is needed
  • For motor learning in children
  • When a telehealth home program is needed
