What is Restless Legs Syndrome?

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological condition characterized by a hard-to-describe uncomfortable sensation in the legs and the urge to move them to relieve this feeling, especially in the evening and nighttime hours. Temporary relief is provided by movement, and symptoms resume with rest.

RLS affects approximately 5-10% of the population; it is more common in women. It can occur in primary (idiopathic) or secondary form (due to causes such as iron deficiency, kidney failure, pregnancy). It seriously impairs sleep quality, leading to chronic insomnia.

The dopaminergic system is known to play an important role in this syndrome. Correction of iron deficiency can resolve the vast majority of secondary cases. Medication should not be started without consulting your physician.

Symptoms

Burning, tingling, crawling, or tension sensation in the legs
Worsening of symptoms when sitting or lying still
Temporary relief with moving the legs or walking
Symptoms prominent in evening and nighttime hours
Severe difficulty falling asleep
Excessive daytime sleepiness and fatigue

Risk Factors

Family history of RLS
Iron deficiency anemia
Kidney failure
Pregnancy (especially in the third trimester)
Some antidepressants and antipsychotics
Caffeine and alcohol consumption

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If symptoms are disrupting your sleep quality and daily life
  • If attacks are occurring more than once a week
  • If there is suspicion of iron deficiency or kidney problem
  • If symptoms are accompanied by nighttime leg twitches (periodic limb movement)

Treatment Methods

01
Iron supplementation if there is iron deficiency (primary approach)
02
Sleep hygiene and avoidance of triggers (caffeine, alcohol, prolonged immobility)
03
Regular exercise and warm showers
04
Dopaminergic drugs (pramipexole, ropinirole — as recommended by a physician)
05
Alpha-2-delta ligands (gabapentin, pregabalin — alternative drug group)
06
Treatment of the underlying disease
