What is Reiki — Evidence Level Assessment?

Reiki is the application of channelled energy to the patient via the practitioner's hand without touch or with a light touch.

Sessions usually last 30–90 minutes; the patient is usually in supine position and clothed.

Most studies are placebo-relaxation comparisons; biological mechanisms have not yet been clarified.

Symptoms targeted in indications: chronic stress
Anxiety and tension
Mild to moderate pain
Sleep disturbance
Cancer-related fatigue
Depressive mood
Postoperative recovery support

Risk Factors

Reiki is generally considered safe; no severe risk has been reported
Caution is required to delay the diagnosis of acute symptoms
It should not replace conventional medical treatment
Caution is required for those with significant trauma history
It should not be used as the sole treatment in serious mental illness
Sessions during pregnancy must be coordinated with the obstetrician
Application by an unqualified practitioner may be ineffective

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Definite medical evaluation is required for new-onset or severe symptom
  • Conventional medical treatment is essential in the case of suspected cancer
  • Pre-Reiki disclosure must be made for chronic disease management
  • If anxiety/depression worsens, a psychiatrist must be consulted
