What is Rehabilitation: Return to Work?

Return-to-work rehabilitation addresses musculoskeletal injuries, neurological conditions, postoperative recovery, and chronic pain interfering with employment. The process begins with functional capacity evaluation comparing physical demands of the worker's job to current abilities measured through standardized lifting, carrying, posture, and endurance tests.

Work conditioning programs combine progressive resistance training, cardiovascular conditioning, simulated work tasks, and pain management for four to eight weeks at three to five hours daily. Work hardening adds psychosocial components, behavioral modification, and full workday simulation. Both target restoration of strength, endurance, and confidence to perform job tasks safely.

Workplace assessment identifies modifiable factors: ergonomic chair and workstation, lifting techniques, task rotation, assistive devices, and gradual return schedule. Vocational rehabilitation supports retraining when previous job is no longer feasible. Successful return requires employer cooperation, transitional duty options, and coordination with occupational physicians, physical therapists, and case managers.
