What is Qigong in Cancer Support and Quality of Life?

Qigong (chi kung) is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that has lasted thousands of years and consists of slow movements, deep breathing and meditation.

The basic principle is the regulation of qi (life energy) flow and balancing the body's natural healing capacity.

In cancer patients meta-analyses show beneficial effect on chemotherapy-related fatigue, sleep disturbance, anxiety and quality of life; it can be safely used as a complement to conventional treatment.

Symptoms

Indications: cancer-related fatigue (CRF)
Indications: chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy
Indications: anxiety, depression and sleep disturbance
Indications: post-mastectomy lymphoedema
Indications: nausea and immune support
Indications: pain management (chronic and post-surgical)
Indications: improvement of quality of life and emotional well-being

Risk Factors

Acute cardiovascular event (acute MI, recent surgery)
Severe osteoporosis and high fracture risk
Active intracranial hypertension
Severe malnutrition and cachexia
Severe anaemia (Hb <8 g/dL)
Acute infection and uncontrolled hyperthermia
Active bleeding and platelet count <30000

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Oncologist approval should be obtained before starting qigong practice
  • Sessions should be applied with a certified instructor and adapted to the patient's condition
  • Practice intensity should be reduced during chemotherapy
  • Conventional treatment cannot be replaced; only supportive purpose
