What is Pulsed Radiofrequency?

Pulsed radiofrequency was developed by Sluijter in 1995; unlike conventional radiofrequency it uses non-thermal effects and reduces nerve activity through electromagnetic field-induced changes.

Indications include trigeminal neuralgia, occipital neuralgia, chronic radiculopathy, postherpetic neuralgia, sacroiliac joint pain, facet joint pain, complex regional pain syndrome and ilioinguinal neuralgia.

Procedures are performed under fluoroscopy or ultrasound guidance; typical settings are 45 V, 20 ms pulse and 2 Hz frequency for 2-8 minutes. Effect lasts 3-12 months.
