What is Pulmonary Rehabilitation — Chronic Follow-up Advanced Phase?

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a personalised programme covering exercise, education, nutritional support and psychosocial intervention.

Initial programme takes 6–12 weeks; advanced phase requires lifelong continuation.

Reduces exacerbation, improves quality of life and reduces hospital admission in COPD, IPF, bronchiectasis and post-COVID lung sequelae.

Symptoms

Conditions in which it is targeted: COPD (GOLD II-IV)
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF)
Bronchiectasis (advanced)
Cystic fibrosis (adolescent-adult)
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH)
Post-COVID-19 long-term sequelae
Pre-lung transplantation/post-lung transplantation

Risk Factors

Severe oxygen-dependent disease (precaution required)
Cardiac comorbidity (recent MI)
Severe locomotor system disease (joint replacement)
Cognitive impairment and dementia
Active smoking (does not enter programme)
Severe psychiatric disease (uncontrolled)
Active infection (acute exacerbation)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Pulmonology evaluation must be done every 3–6 months
  • Pulmonary function test and 6-minute walk test annually
  • Definite intervention is required for new dyspnoea or exacerbation
  • Bone density follow-up for osteoporosis with chronic steroid use
