What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injection for Joint Disorders?

PRP is prepared by centrifuging a small volume of the patient's blood to concentrate platelets and their growth factors (PDGF, TGF-β, VEGF). The concentrate is injected into the joint or peritendinous tissue.

Common indications include knee osteoarthritis (especially Kellgren-Lawrence grade I–III), epicondylitis, plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff tendinopathy and selected ligament injuries; evidence is strongest for early-stage knee osteoarthritis.

Treatment is delivered by image-guided injection in 1–3 sessions over weeks. Outcomes vary with patient age, BMI, joint severity, leukocyte content of the preparation and exercise rehabilitation after the procedure.

Symptoms

Persistent joint pain despite physiotherapy
Mild-to-moderate osteoarthritis
Chronic tendinopathy
Activity-related joint stiffness
Reduced functional capacity
Failure of NSAIDs
Refusal or postponement of joint replacement

Risk Factors

Active infection at injection site
Active malignancy
Severe thrombocytopenia
Coagulopathy or anticoagulant therapy
Pregnancy
Severe joint deformity (Kellgren-Lawrence IV)
Recent corticosteroid injection
