What is Progressive Muscle Relaxation (Jacobson Technique)?

Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) is a behavioral relaxation technique developed by Edmund Jacobson in the 1920s, based on contracting muscle groups in a defined sequence and then consciously releasing them.

It has shown a helpful effect in conditions such as anxiety, sleep disorders, chronic headache, tension-related muscle pain, stress related to cancer treatment and high blood pressure. Its effectiveness is supported at a limited-to-moderate level in systematic reviews.

Important advantages include being easy to learn, low cost and safe. In severe psychiatric disorders it should be applied under specialist supervision.
