What is Primary Progressive Aphasia?

Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a neurodegenerative syndrome characterized by slow and progressive impairment of language functions. Other cognitive functions are largely preserved in the first years.

It has three main variants: semantic, agrammatic, and logopenic. It is mainly associated with frontotemporal degeneration and Alzheimer pathologies.

Diagnosis is made with clinical evaluation, neuropsychological tests, and imaging. Speech therapy plays an important role in treatment.

Slowing of speech rate
Later-added behavioral and cognitive changes

History of frontotemporal degeneration

History of head trauma
Neurodevelopmental language problems
