What is Preparation for Radiological Examinations?

Preparation for radiological examinations optimizes image quality, prevents contrast complications and ensures patient safety. Preparation differs for each examination.

Fasting for 4–6 hours before abdominal ultrasonography, removing metal jewelry before MRI, and renal function testing before CT contrast are key elements of preparation.

Symptoms

Preparation varies by type and area of examination
Abdominal US: 4–6 hours fasting, holding urine (for pelvic US)
MRI: information on metal implants, claustrophobia evaluation
CT contrast: questioning of renal function and allergy history
PET-CT: 6 hours fasting, blood glucose <200 mg/dL
Mammography: arriving without deodorant or lotion

Risk Factors

Inadequate preparation leads to repeating the examination
Risk of anaphylaxis increases if contrast allergy history is not reported
Serious harm may occur on MRI if metal implants are not reported
Hyperglycemia reduces PET-CT quality
Excessive bowel gas degrades abdominal US quality
Iodine allergy affects the use of iodinated contrast

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Inform the radiology unit about your medications, allergies and implants before the exam
  • Always state if you are pregnant or possibly pregnant
  • In diabetic patients, metformin is held before and after CT contrast
  • If unsure about your preparation, call the day before to ask

Treatment Methods

01
If preparation is incomplete, the exam is postponed or rescheduled
02
Premedication (steroid + antihistamine) for contrast allergy
03
If MR-incompatible implants exist, alternative imaging (CT or US) is selected
04
If blood glucose is high in PET-CT, the appointment is rescheduled after insulin therapy
05
In claustrophobia, anxiolytic medication or open MRI option is considered
