What is Postural Disorders?

Ideal posture is defined as alignment in which body weight is supported with minimal muscle work, minimizing energy consumption among muscles. Faulty posture leads to muscle overload, joint compression and movement dysfunction.

Forward head posture, rounded shoulders, increased lumbar lordosis (excessive low back curve), pes planus (flat foot) and genu valgum/varum (knock or bow legs) are common postural disorders.

Long-term computer and smartphone use, sedentary lifestyle and weak core muscles are among the main causes of postural disorders in modern society.

Symptoms

Neck and upper back pain
Low back pain and fatigue
Headache (cervical origin)
Shoulder impingement syndrome
Early fatigue and shortness of breath
Balance impairment and difficulty with coordination

Risk Factors

Prolonged sitting and desk work
Excessive use of smartphones and tablets
Weak core and postural muscles
Unilateral sports activities
Excess weight
Visual impairments and non-ergonomic work environment
