What is Post-Total Hip Arthroplasty Rehabilitation?

The post-total hip arthroplasty rehabilitation program is customized according to the surgical approach (anterior, posterior, lateral). Since the dislocation risk is highest with the posterior approach, hip precautions are particularly important in this group.

The aim of rehabilitation is protection from hip dislocation, pain management, regaining strength and range of motion, gait training and independence in activities of daily living.

Hip precautions usually last 6-12 weeks and include the prohibition of flexion above 90°, adduction and internal rotation. With the anterior approach less restriction is applied because the dislocation risk is low.

Symptoms

Post-op hip pain
Walking difficulty
Hip range of motion limitation
Muscle weakness (especially gluteal)
Sensation of leg length difference
Limping
Fatigue

Risk Factors

Advanced age
Inadequate prehabilitation
Obesity
Cognitive impairment
Previous hip surgeries
Neuromuscular diseases
Contralateral extremity problems
