What is Post-Stroke Rehabilitation?

Structured interdisciplinary rehabilitation initiated as soon as medically stable to promote neurologic recovery.

Targets motor deficits, aphasia, dysphagia, cognition, vision, bowel/bladder, and psychosocial adaptation.

Neuroplasticity is maximized with intensive, task-specific, repetitive, goal-oriented training.

Settings range from acute inpatient rehabilitation to outpatient and home-based programs based on functional need.

Symptoms

Hemiparesis or hemiplegia affecting face, arm, or leg
Aphasia (Broca, Wernicke, global) or dysarthria
Dysphagia with aspiration risk
Hemisensory loss, neglect, or visual field deficit
Cognitive and executive dysfunction, post-stroke depression
Spasticity developing weeks to months after stroke

Risk Factors

Initial stroke severity (NIHSS score)
Advanced age, prior disability, and cognitive impairment
Large infarct or hemorrhage, brainstem involvement
Post-stroke complications: aspiration pneumonia, DVT, UTI
Depression, apathy, and limited social support
Comorbidities: diabetes, heart failure, frailty

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • FAST symptoms (face, arm, speech, time) warranting emergency evaluation
  • New neurologic deterioration during rehabilitation
  • Depressed mood, safety concerns, or caregiver burnout

Treatment Methods

01
Early mobilization within 24–48 hours after stabilization
02
Task-specific motor training: gait, upper limb, constraint-induced movement therapy
03
Speech-language therapy for aphasia and swallowing rehabilitation
04
Occupational therapy for ADL retraining and home adaptations
05
Spasticity management: stretching, orthoses, botulinum toxin, oral agents
06
Secondary prevention: antiplatelets, statins, blood pressure control
