What is Post-Prosthesis Rehabilitation?

Post-prosthesis rehabilitation is a multidisciplinary process aimed at maximum functional independence with prosthesis fitting and adaptation training in patients who have undergone limb amputation due to traumatic, vascular or oncological cause.

Phases: pre-prosthetic preparation (residual limb shaping, oedema control), prosthesis fitting, donning and walking training.

Modern myoelectric and microprocessor-controlled prostheses provide more natural walking; sufficient stump preparation, muscle strength and cardiopulmonary fitness are critical for prosthesis use.

Symptoms

Residual limb (stump) oedema, pain and muscle weakness
Phantom pain and phantom limb sensation
Skin problems (irritation, callus, ulcer)
Imbalance and risk of falls
Low energy and walking difficulty
Fear and isolation about social participation

Risk Factors

Vascular cause amputation (diabetes, peripheral artery disease)
Advanced age and frailty
Cardiovascular comorbidity (lower physical capacity)
Pre-existing imbalance and visual problem
Insufficient pre-prosthetic preparation
Lack of social support and economic difficulty

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Pre-prosthetic rehabilitation programme should be initiated within four to six weeks after amputation
  • Prosthesis fitting timing depends on stump healing (usually six to eight weeks)
  • Skin problems and stump pain require examination
  • Cardiopulmonary evaluation must be performed before prosthesis use

Treatment Methods

01
Stump shaping (compression bandage, stump shrinker)
02
Muscle strengthening and balance training (in proximal and contralateral extremity)
03
Cardiopulmonary endurance work
04
Prosthesis fitting and gait training (parallel bars, walking sticks, free walking)
05
Phantom pain treatment (mirror therapy, mental imagery)
06
Psychosocial support and reintegration into work life
