What is Post-Fracture Rehabilitation?

Structured rehabilitation following fracture healing to restore pre-injury function and prevent long-term disability.

Phases: protected immobilization, early motion, strengthening, functional and sport-specific return.

Timing depends on fracture type, location, stability, and method of fixation (conservative vs surgical).

Prevention of stiffness, muscle atrophy, complex regional pain syndrome, and bone density loss is central.

Symptoms

Joint stiffness and limited range of motion after immobilization
Muscle atrophy and weakness in the affected limb
Residual pain and tenderness at the fracture site
Altered gait or compensatory movement patterns
Swelling and edema during rehabilitation phase
Psychological fear of movement or re-injury

Risk Factors

Prolonged immobilization (>6 weeks) and delayed mobilization
Severity of initial injury and soft tissue damage
Advanced age, osteoporosis, and sarcopenia
Diabetes, smoking, and poor nutrition
Infection or delayed union
Inadequate pain management limiting therapy participation

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Persistent pain, swelling, or deformity after cast removal
  • Signs of infection, delayed union, or hardware issues
  • Complex regional pain syndrome: disproportionate pain, skin changes, allodynia

Treatment Methods

01
Early phase: edema control, isometric muscle activation, adjacent joint mobility
02
Progressive range of motion and gentle strengthening per healing phase
03
Weight-bearing progression guided by radiographic union
04
Proprioceptive training and functional task rehabilitation
05
Management of complications: CRPS, adhesive capsulitis, joint stiffness
06
Return-to-sport or occupation with criteria-based progression
