What is Post-amputation Prosthetic Rehabilitation?

Post-amputation prosthetic rehabilitation is a multidisciplinary programme aiming to optimise patient function with a prosthesis after lower or upper limb amputation. It begins with pre-prosthetic stump care, oedema control, range of motion preservation and muscle strengthening.

After ideal stump shaping with elastic compressive bandage, an interim prosthesis is applied within 4-6 weeks; following residual limb maturation, the definitive prosthesis is prescribed. Modern prostheses include myoelectric and microprocessor-controlled options.

Rehabilitation duration varies between 3-12 months according to amputation level, age and comorbidities. Successful prosthetic ambulation requires intensive gait training, balance exercises and energy expenditure adaptation.

Symptoms

Phantom limb sensation
Phantom limb pain
Residual limb pain (neuroma)
Skin breakdown and pressure injury
Difficulty in stump shaping
Prosthesis fitting problems
Anxiety and depression

Risk Factors

Diabetic foot complications
Peripheral artery disease
Trauma (motor vehicle accident, work accident)
Tumour resection (osteosarcoma)
Severe infection (necrotising fasciitis)
Congenital limb defects
Diabetes mellitus and obesity

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Persistent or worsening phantom limb pain
  • Skin breakdown and pressure injury on stump
  • Prosthesis fitting problems
  • Severe loss of function and depression

Treatment Methods

01
Pre-prosthetic stump shaping and elastic bandage
02
Range of motion exercises and contracture prevention
03
Pharmacotherapy and mirror therapy for phantom limb pain
04
Interim prosthesis (within 4-6 weeks)
05
Definitive prosthesis selection and fitting
06
Gait training and balance exercises
07
