What is Porcelain Laminate Veneers?

Porcelain laminate veneers are thin (0.3-0.7 mm) custom-made ceramic shells bonded to the labial surface of anterior teeth to enhance aesthetics by correcting tooth color, shape, size, alignment, surface defects, and minor positional issues.

Modern veneers use feldspathic porcelain, lithium disilicate (e.max), or zirconia-reinforced ceramics fabricated with CAD/CAM or layered hand-built techniques. Minimal tooth preparation (0.3-0.5 mm reduction) preserves enamel for optimal bonding and longevity.

Procedure typically requires 2-3 visits: consultation and treatment planning with diagnostic wax-up and digital smile design, tooth preparation and impression, and bonding with light-cured resin cement. With proper care, veneers can last 10-20 years or more.

Symptoms

Tooth discoloration unresponsive to whitening
Chipped, fractured, or worn front teeth
Gaps or diastema between teeth (small to moderate)
Mildly misaligned or rotated teeth (instant orthodontics)
Misshapen or peg-shaped teeth
Surface enamel defects or hypoplasia
Worn dentition from bruxism or erosion

Risk Factors

Severe bruxism without protective splint (relative contraindication)
Inadequate enamel for bonding (after extensive previous restorations)
Active periodontal disease
Severe malocclusion requiring orthodontic correction
Heavy smoking and poor oral hygiene
Unrealistic patient expectations
Parafunctional habits (nail biting, ice chewing)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Cosmetic concerns about front tooth color, shape, or alignment
  • Chipped or fractured anterior teeth
  • Tetracycline staining or fluorosis unresponsive to whitening
  • Worn or eroded front teeth from bruxism or acid reflux
  • Spaces or gaps between front teeth
  • Failed previous cosmetic restorations
  • Pre-treatment smile design consultation

Treatment Methods

01
Comprehensive oral examination, photographs, and digital smile design
02
Diagnostic wax-up and mock-up trial in mouth
03
Tooth preparation (0.3-0.5 mm enamel reduction with no dentin exposure if possible)
04
Digital or conventional impressions for laboratory fabrication
05
Temporary veneers during 1-2 weeks of laboratory work
06
Try-in, color verification, and adhesive bonding with light-cured resin cement
07
