What is Porcelain Crown?

A dental crown is the most common indirect restoration in cases where the structural loss of the tooth exceeds 50% (large caries, fracture, post-root canal treatment). Material options include: porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM, classic, durable), monolithic zirconia (high strength, posterior preference), lithium disilicate (e.max, optimal aesthetics), and feldspathic porcelain.

Treatment is performed in 2 sessions: in the first session 1-1.5 mm reduction, impression with putty/wash technique or digital scanner, temporary crown placement; in the second session (10-14 days later) the permanent crown is cemented (resin or zinc phosphate cement). The CAD/CAM same-day method (Cerec) shortens the wait time.

The 5-year survival rate for porcelain crowns is 95%, while the 10-year rate is 85%. Most common complications are biological (secondary caries, pulpitis, root fracture) and technical (porcelain chipping, debonding). Periodic checkups and good oral hygiene are essential.
