What is Polyneuropathy?

Polyneuropathy is a clinical picture that arises from simultaneous damage to multiple peripheral nerves. It most often manifests as symmetric numbness, tingling, and pain that begin in the distal parts of the hands and feet.

The most common causes include diabetes mellitus, chronic alcohol use, vitamin B12 deficiency, chronic kidney disease, and certain medications. Treatment directed at the cause directly affects the course of polyneuropathy.

If the underlying cause is corrected, nerve damage may be partially reversed. In chronic and progressive cases, symptomatic treatment and rehabilitation become important to preserve quality of life.

Symptoms

Symmetric numbness and tingling in hands and feet
Burning or electric shock-like pain
Balance impairment and difficulty walking
Muscle weakness in hands and feet
Decreased deep tendon reflexes
Decreased or increased sweating (autonomic involvement)

Risk Factors

Diabetes mellitus
Chronic alcohol use
Vitamin B12, B6, or folate deficiency
Chemotherapy or use of certain antibiotics
Autoimmune diseases (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Newly emerging numbness and tingling in both hands or feet
  • Rapid spread of numbness or addition of weakness
  • Development of foot wounds or sensory loss in diabetic patients
  • When the risk of falling is increased due to balance impairment

Treatment Methods

01
Treatment of the underlying cause (diabetes control, alcohol cessation, vitamin replacement)
02
Pregabalin, gabapentin, or duloxetine for neuropathic pain
03
B12 and other vitamin supplements
04
Physiotherapy and balance exercises
05
Foot care and protective orthosis (for diabetic neuropathy)
