What is Physical Therapy in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)?

Systemic lupus erythematosus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect many organs. Musculoskeletal involvement is seen in 90% of patients and can produce non-erosive deformities such as Jaccoud arthropathy.

Lupus patients commonly experience fatigue, myalgia, joint stiffness, myositis and avascular necrosis that benefit from physical therapy. Photosensitivity influences the timing and selection of treatment.

Therapy aims at exercise training, strengthening, aerobic capacity, joint protection, energy conservation and improved quality of life. The programme is adapted during disease flares.

Symptoms

Morning stiffness
Fatigue
Muscle weakness
