What is Peripheral Neuropathy Rehabilitation?

Peripheral neuropathy is impairment of motor, sensory, and autonomic functions due to disease of the peripheral nervous system. Diabetes, trauma, autoimmune diseases, toxins, and vitamin deficiencies are the most common causes.

The rehabilitation program includes muscle strengthening, balance and coordination training, sensory re-education, pain management, and fall-prevention strategies. Electrotherapy methods may support nerve regeneration.

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is the most common form, and foot care, appropriate footwear, and fall-prevention programs are particularly important in these patients.

Symptoms

Numbness, tingling, and burning in the hands and feet
Distal muscle weakness and atrophy
Balance disturbance and tendency to fall
Reduction of pain or pain sensation
Foot deformities (hammer toe, foot drop)

Risk Factors

Diabetes (most common cause)
Alcohol use
Vitamin B12 deficiency
Chemotherapy and neurotoxic drugs
Autoimmune diseases
