What is Peripheral Angiography?

Peripheral angiography is an invasive method used for the imaging and treatment of stenosis, occlusion, aneurysm, and vascular malformations in the vessels of the lower and upper extremities.

It is performed in peripheral artery disease (PAD), diabetic foot, critical limb ischemia, dialysis fistulae, and traumatic vascular injuries.

Treatment procedures such as balloon angioplasty, stenting, thrombolysis, and embolization can be performed in the same session as the diagnostic angiogram.

Symptoms

Claudication (leg pain on walking)
Rest pain
Diabetic foot ulcer
Rest ischemia
Acute limb ischemia
Traumatic vascular injury

Risk Factors

Contrast allergy and renal failure
Anticoagulant use
Hematoma at the catheter site
Distal embolization
Radiation exposure
Diabetes mellitus

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Claudication and non-healing wounds may be serious; consult a vascular surgeon
  • Acute coldness and loss of pulse is an emergency — call 112
  • Pre-procedural clinical evaluation and Doppler ultrasound should be performed
  • Bed rest and compression after the procedure are essential

Treatment Methods

01
Catheterization via the femoral artery
02
Angiography with contrast injection
03
Balloon angioplasty at the stenotic site
04
Stent placement if required
05
Catheter-directed thrombolysis if there is thrombosis
06
Doppler follow-up after the procedure
