What is Peri-implantitis?

Peri-implantitis is an infectious-inflammatory disease of the mucosa and alveolar bone around the dental implant. Similar to periodontal disease, it begins with bacterial plaque accumulation and progresses with bone loss.

Peri-implant mucositis (soft tissue inflammation) is the precursor stage of peri-implantitis. If treated early, bone loss can be prevented; in advanced cases, implant loss may be inevitable.

Treatment is planned as mechanical debridement, antiseptic therapy, antibiotherapy, and surgical intervention (bone grafting) if necessary.

Symptoms

Bleeding gums around the implant
Gum redness and swelling
Increased pocket depth around implant
Purulent discharge
Implant mobility (in advanced stage)
Bone loss on radiograph

Risk Factors

Inadequate oral hygiene
Smoking
Diabetes
Periodontitis history
Immunosuppression
Excess cement residue

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Bleeding and swelling around implant
  • If discharge comes from around the implant
  • If implant mobility is felt
  • If pain around the implant

Treatment Methods

01
Mechanical debridement and curettage
02
Antiseptic irrigation (chlorhexidine)
03
Local and systemic antibiotherapy
04
Surgical debridement and implantoplasty
05
