What is Pediatric Physiotherapy (Neuromotor Focus)?

Pediatric neuromotor physiotherapy is applied in spastic CP, hypotonic CP, early-period brachial plexus injury, spinal muscular atrophy, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, meningomyelocele, and congenital neuropathies. Bayley, AIMS, and GMFM scales are used to follow motor milestones.

Approaches: 1) Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NDT/Bobath) — facilitation and inhibition of movement patterns, 2) Vojta reflex locomotion — reflexive movement triggered by trigger points, 3) Sensory integration — vestibular, proprioceptive, and tactile input, 4) Activity-based intensive training.

A family-centered approach is important; parents should perform the home exercise program daily. Play-based methods enhance motivation. Motor learning principles (repetition, variation, meaningful activity) are fundamental at every age.

Symptoms

Motor developmental delay
Hypotonicity
Asymmetric movement patterns
Muscle weakness
Contractures
Balance impairment

Risk Factors

Prematurity
Perinatal asphyxia
Birth trauma
Genetic neuromuscular disease
Chromosomal anomalies
Congenital malformations

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Delay in motor milestones
  • When abnormal movement patterns are noticed
  • When asymmetric posture and movement are present
  • Delay in head control
  • Early evaluation when there is a family history
