What is Pediatric Dentistry (Pedodontics)?

Pedodontics covers patients aged 0-18; specialty training is 3-4 years (after dental school). Three main pillars: (1) preventive dentistry (fluoride, sealant, oral hygiene education), (2) restorative dentistry (composite, stainless steel crown, pulp therapy), (3) behavior management.

Pediatric anatomy and physiology differ from adult: deciduous teeth (20 teeth), thinner enamel-dentin layer, larger pulp chamber, mixed dentition (6-12 years), occlusal development. Approach is age-appropriate: Tell-Show-Do, modeling, positive reinforcement, distraction.

Special situations: trauma management (avulsion, fracture - urgent intervention required), pulp therapy in deciduous teeth (pulpotomy/pulpectomy), space maintainer (premature extraction loss), N₂O-O₂ sedation, general anesthesia (developmentally disabled, severe behavior problem). Modern pedodontists use atraumatic restorative treatment (ART), Hall technique, and silver diamine fluoride (SDF). Pediatric dental visit is recommended by 1 year of age.
