What is Ozone Therapy: Inflammatory Bowel Disease?

Ozone therapy is the application of medical ozone (O3) and oxygen mixture in various ways. Major auto-hemotherapy (MAH), minor auto-hemotherapy, rectal insufflation, topical ozonated oil, and ozonated water are common methods.

In IBD studies, rectal ozone insufflation has shown improvement in remission rate, endoscopic score, and quality of life in limited controlled data. Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and microbiome modulation mechanisms have been proposed.

Evidence level is low; it does not replace standard immunosuppressive and biological treatment. Appropriate indication, dose, application frequency, and safety profile are not clear. It should be considered only by experienced practitioners with physician approval.
