What is Ozonated Water in Dentistry (Antiseptic)?

Ozonated water is generated by dissolving medical-grade ozone gas in distilled water. It rapidly inactivates bacteria, viruses and fungi by oxidative damage to cell walls and biofilm matrix.

In dentistry it is used for periodontal pocket irrigation, supplementary root canal disinfection after instrumentation, oral surgery rinses, post-implant cleansing and adjuvant therapy of recurrent aphthous ulcers.

Evidence supports complementary efficacy alongside conventional mechanical and chemotherapeutic protocols rather than replacing chlorhexidine or sodium hypochlorite. Concentrations and contact times are operator-controlled.

Symptoms

Periodontitis with persistent pockets
Endodontic infection
Postoperative wound after extraction or implant
Recurrent aphthous ulcers
Mucositis after radiotherapy
Peri-implantitis
Halitosis from anaerobic bacteria

Risk Factors

Diabetes mellitus
Smoking
Immunosuppression
Poor oral hygiene
History of periodontal disease
Pregnancy gingivitis
Patients on antiresorptive therapy
