What is Orthosis Use (Bracing)?

Orthoses are external devices that support, align, restrict or substitute the function of body segments. They are classified by region (cervical, spinal, upper or lower limb) and design (static or dynamic).

Indications include foot drop with ankle-foot orthosis (AFO), scoliosis with thoracolumbosacral orthosis (TLSO), knee instability with hinged knee brace, post-stroke spasticity, and post-fracture stabilisation.

Successful orthotic care requires team-based assessment, custom fabrication, gradual wear schedule, periodic adjustment and education to ensure adherence and avoid skin or joint complications.
