What is Oral Night Appliance?

Oral night appliances are removable dental devices used at night for prevention and treatment of dental and orofacial conditions; they protect teeth, regulate jaw position and improve airway flow.

The most common types are the flat-plane occlusal splint (in bruxism), the mandibular advancement device (MAD; in OSA) and stabilisation splints (in TMJ disorders).

Symptoms

Tooth grinding (bruxism)
Tooth wear, fracture
Snoring, mild-moderate OSA
TMJ (temporomandibular joint) pain, click
Headache, jaw fatigue (on awakening)
Tooth sensitivity, restoration loss

Risk Factors

Severe bruxism (RMMA >4/hour)
Costly restorations (crown, implant)
Mild-moderate OSA (CPAP intolerant)
Chronic TMJ disorder
Stress, anxiety
Poor sleep hygiene
