What is Occupational Ergonomics Consultation?

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders cause one-third of all occupational injuries and arise from repetitive motion, awkward postures, sustained force, and prolonged static positioning. Computer workers, manufacturing employees, and healthcare workers represent high-risk groups for low back pain, neck pain, and upper extremity disorders.

Ergonomic consultation begins with risk identification using validated tools such as the rapid upper limb assessment, REBA, and NIOSH lifting equation. On-site evaluation analyzes workstation height, monitor placement, keyboard and mouse position, lighting, and task duration with rest break frequency.

Interventions follow a hierarchy starting with engineering controls such as adjustable furniture, lift-assist devices, and tool redesign, followed by administrative controls such as job rotation and rest break scheduling, and ending with personal protective equipment when residual risk remains. Worker training in safe lifting, posture awareness, and microbreak performance complements physical changes.

Symptoms

Neck or shoulder pain after computer work
Wrist and hand discomfort with repetitive tasks
Low back pain after lifting or sitting
Eye strain and headache with display use
Reduced productivity due to musculoskeletal symptoms

Risk Factors

Repetitive motion or sustained postures
Heavy or awkward lifting
Poorly adjusted workstation
Long uninterrupted task duration
Pre-existing musculoskeletal disorders

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When work-related symptoms persist beyond two weeks
  • When pain interferes with task performance
  • When new workstation or task is introduced
  • When return-to-work after injury is planned
  • When employer requests preventive evaluation

Treatment Methods

01
Risk identification with RULA, REBA, or NIOSH tools
02
Workstation analysis and engineering controls
03
Adjustable chair and monitor positioning
04
Job rotation and rest break scheduling
05
Lifting and posture training
06
Microbreak and stretching program
07
Follow-up reassessment after intervention
