What is Occupational Ergonomic Rehabilitation?

Occupational ergonomic rehabilitation is the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders associated with the work environment, repetitive movements and posture problems.

Common conditions include carpal tunnel syndrome, low back pain (cumulative trauma), neck-shoulder pain (computer use), epicondylitis (tennis elbow), tendinitis and herniated disc.

Treatment is performed by a PMR specialist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist and ergonomist; ergonomic assessment of the workplace, exercise programme, modification and return-to-work training are key.

Symptoms

Indications: cumulative trauma disorder (CTD)
Indications: carpal tunnel syndrome (computer worker)
Indications: chronic low back pain (lifting workers)
Indications: neck-shoulder myofascial pain syndrome
Indications: lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow)
Indications: rotator cuff tendinitis
Indications: post-occupational accident return-to-work

Risk Factors

Repetitive motion (typing, assembly line)
Sitting-standing for long periods (poor posture)
Heavy load carrying and incorrect lifting
Vibration exposure (drill, jackhammer)
Cold environment and hand-arm vibration
Stress and intense work tempo
Inadequate workplace ergonomics

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Persistent musculoskeletal pain related to work requires PMR or occupational medicine evaluation
  • Ergonomic risk assessment of the workplace should be done
  • Restricted duty during return-to-work period and gradual increase
  • Long-term follow-up: prevention of relapse and ergonomic training

Treatment Methods

01
Workplace ergonomic assessment (workstation, computer height)
02
Stretching and strengthening exercise programme
03
Posture correction and microbreaks (every 30 min)
04
Splint use (carpal tunnel, epicondylitis)
05
Modalities (TENS, ultrasound, paraffin)
06
Gradual return-to-work programme (functional capacity assessment)
