What is Non-contrast CT?

Non-contrast computed tomography (CT) is a radiological examination performed without administering contrast agent, in which numerous slice images obtained with X-rays are combined by a computer for three-dimensional evaluation.

It is preferred especially in suspected head trauma, acute ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke, urinary tract stones and lung nodule screening. The procedure takes only a few minutes.

Because no contrast is used, there is no risk of impairing renal function and no allergy concerns; however, there is radiation exposure, so it must be used only when indicated.

Symptoms

Acute headache and altered consciousness
Evaluation after head trauma
Suspected acute stroke
Flank pain and suspected kidney stone
Lung nodule screening
Evaluation of sinus pathologies
Bone fracture assessment

Risk Factors

Renal failure (preference reason for not administering contrast)
History of contrast allergy
Pregnancy (not recommended unless mandatory)
Presence of metal implants and foreign bodies
Radiation sensitivity in pediatric patients
Previous frequent CT exposure

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • CT indication and alternatives should be left to the physician's decision
  • Inform before the exam in case of pregnancy
  • Previous contrast allergy must always be reported
  • Low-dose CT protocols should be preferred in children

Treatment Methods

01
Removal of metal accessories
02
Patient positioning and remaining still
03
Use of low-dose protocols (ALARA principle)
04
Evaluation of ultrasound or MR alternatives in case of suspected pregnancy
05
Reporting and physician evaluation after the examination
06
Adding the results to the electronic health record
