What is Neurogenic Bowel Rehabilitation?

Neurogenic bowel is the impairment of defecation control as a result of damage to the central nervous system or peripheral nerves. Constipation, fecal incontinence, and prolonged time spent during defecation are common problems.

There are two main types: upper motor neuron type (reflexive - spastic bowel, SCI above T12) and lower motor neuron type (areflexive - flaccid bowel, cauda equina or conus medullaris lesion). Each type requires a different therapeutic approach.

Goals: regular and predictable defecation, prevention of constipation and fecal impaction, prevention of incontinence, avoidance of autonomic dysreflexia, and ensuring patient independence.
