What is Neurological Long COVID?

Neurological long COVID encompasses neurological and cognitive symptoms lasting more than 12 weeks after SARS-CoV-2 infection.

It is most often characterized by brain fog, cognitive impairment, persistent headache, anxiety-depression and dysautonomia such as POTS.

Mechanisms include neuroinflammation, microthrombi, mitochondrial dysfunction and autoimmunity.

Symptoms

Brain fog: difficulty concentrating, memory disturbance
Persistent fatigue and post-exertional malaise
Headache, especially tension type and migraine-like
Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome POTS
Anosmia, ageusia and dysautonomic symptoms

Risk Factors

Severe acute COVID-19 infection
Female sex and middle age
Pre-existing autoimmune disease or migraine
High BMI and metabolic syndrome
Anxiety-depression history

  • Cognitive symptoms persisting more than 12 weeks after COVID-19

  • New-onset headache or migraine attacks
