What is Myofascial Release Techniques?

Myofascial release (MFR) is a hands-on physiotherapy technique applying sustained low-load pressure to fascial restrictions, trigger points and adhesions to restore tissue glide, reduce pain and improve range of motion within the connective-tissue continuum.

Indications include chronic neck and low back pain, myofascial pain syndrome with trigger points, post-surgical scar adhesions, plantar fasciitis, IT band syndrome, fibromyalgia and post-mastectomy lymphoedema; techniques include direct sustained release, indirect oscillatory, cross-fibre friction and instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilisation (IASTM).

MFR is delivered as part of a multimodal physiotherapy programme combined with corrective exercise, postural retraining and patient self-release using foam roller and ball; outcomes are improved with consistent home programme and lifestyle change.

Symptoms

Chronic neck or low back pain
Trigger points with referred pain pattern
Restricted range of motion
Plantar fasciitis or IT band syndrome
Post-surgical scar tightness
Fibromyalgia and widespread tender points
Post-mastectomy lymphoedema

Risk Factors

Repetitive occupational strain
Prolonged poor posture and sedentary work
Previous trauma or surgery with scar
Sport-related overuse
Fibromyalgia and chronic pain syndrome
Post-mastectomy axillary cording
Stress and sleep disturbance

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Persistent musculoskeletal pain
  • Restricted range of motion affecting function
  • Trigger points with referred pain
  • Post-surgical scar with stiffness

Treatment Methods

01
Initial assessment and palpation of trigger points
02
Sustained direct fascial release
03
Instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilisation (IASTM)
04
Cross-fibre and friction techniques
05
Corrective exercise and postural retraining
06
Self-release with foam roller and ball at home
07
Adjunctive dry needling or ultrasound
