What is Myoelectric Upper Extremity Prosthesis Rehabilitation?

Myoelectric prostheses provide motorized grip, wrist rotation, and elbow flexion by capturing EMG signals from the flexor and extensor muscle groups on the residual limb with two or more electrodes. Modern multi-finger models (bebionic, i-limb, Taska) offer 10+ grip patterns.

Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR) surgery reinnervates the nerves of the amputated stump into pectoralis or biceps muscles, providing more control channels. This allows wrist, elbow, and shoulder movements to be controlled separately.

Rehabilitation is performed in 3 phases: 1) Pre-prosthetic (residual limb care, EMG training), 2) Prosthesis use training (grip modes), 3) ADL (activities of daily living) integration. Mirror therapy and virtual reality accelerate motor planning.

Symptoms

Transradial or transhumeral amputation
Loss of two limbs
Congenital absence of upper extremity
Active life demand
Sufficient stump muscle strength
Cognitive ability

Risk Factors

Stump muscle weakness
Skin problem (scar, sensitivity)
Cognitive limitation
Prosthesis rejection
Phantom pain
Financial barrier

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • 3-6 weeks after amputation
  • When stump healing is complete
  • For prosthesis evaluation
  • When TMR surgery is being considered
  • With functional recovery demand
