What is Multiple System Atrophy - Cerebellar Type (MSA-C)?

Multiple system atrophy cerebellar type (MSA-C) is an adult-onset disease characterised by simultaneous degeneration of the cerebellum, pons and autonomic nervous system.

Underlying the disease is alpha-synuclein accumulation in oligodendrocytes; for this reason it is classified as a synucleinopathy.

Onset is usually in the 50s-60s and the disease is rapidly progressive. Cerebellar findings predominate, while parkinsonism is less prominent.
