What is MR Spectroscopy (MRS)?

MR spectroscopy (MRS) is an MRI application that evaluates the relative concentration of metabolites (N-acetylaspartate, choline, creatine, lactate, lipid) within tissue.

It is most often used in the brain; it contributes to tumor differentiation, distinguishing radiation necrosis from recurrence, evaluation of metabolic diseases, and assessment of dementia.

It provides information additional to standard MRI. Because it requires special sequences and post-processing, it should be performed in experienced centers.

Symptoms

Characterization of brain tumors
Tumor recurrence vs. radiation necrosis
Diagnosis of metabolic diseases
Evaluation of neurodegenerative disorders
Epilepsy foci
Staging of hypoxic ischemic injury

Risk Factors

General MRI contraindications
Motion artifact
Poor shim (magnetic field inhomogeneity)
Small lesion size
Previous surgery and metallic artifact
Patient cooperation

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • MR spectroscopy is interpreted together with standard MRI, not alone
  • The clinician and radiologist should decide jointly
  • The procedure may take longer than standard MRI
  • It should be remembered that the results do not provide a definitive diagnosis

Treatment Methods

01
Standard MRI sequences for planning
02
Single- or multi-voxel spectroscopy
03
Analysis of metabolite peaks
04
Calculation of ratios (Cho/Cr, NAA/Cr)
05
Evaluation with the clinical picture
06
Planning a biopsy if needed
