What is MR Enterography?

MR enterography is an MR protocol providing distension of small intestine using oral contrast material (usually mannitol or polyethylene glycol) and soft tissue evaluation with IV contrast.

It is mainly used in Crohn's disease diagnosis, activity assessment, identification of complications (stricture, fistula, abscess), polyposis syndromes and small bowel tumors. Compared to CT enterography, it does not contain radiation.

Acquisition time is approximately 30-45 minutes, the patient may lie prone or supine. The patient consumes about 1 liter of oral fluid before the procedure.

Symptoms

Crohn's disease diagnosis and follow-up
Suspicion of small bowel tumor
Fistula and abscess evaluation
Etiology investigation in ileus
Polyposis syndrome monitoring
Pediatric bowel diseases

Risk Factors

Advanced renal failure (gadolinium)
MR contraindication (implant, pacemaker)
Claustrophobia
Inability to tolerate oral contrast with vomiting
Pregnancy (relative)
Motion artifacts

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Performed with gastroenterology referral
  • Repeat acquisition is planned in activity changes
  • Oral contrast tolerance should be evaluated beforehand
  • Results should be interpreted with clinical and laboratory data

Treatment Methods

01
Provision of bowel distension with oral contrast
02
Reduction of motion with anti-spasmodic (if needed)
03
Dynamic and delayed contrast series
04
DWI and T2 evaluations
05
Multidisciplinary IBD council contribution
