What is Morton's Neuroma?

Morton's neuroma develops as a result of thickening of the fibrous tissue surrounding the interdigital nerve in the sole of the foot. It is not a true tumor but perineural fibrosis that develops in response to chronic pressure and irritation. It most commonly involves the area between the 3rd and 4th toes.

Symptoms become more pronounced with narrow and high-heeled shoes; patients often complain of feeling like 'there is a stone in my shoe'. Sharp, electric-shock-like pain while walking and burning, numbness in the toe tips are felt.

Diagnosis is made by clinical examination and ultrasound or MRI. Conservative approaches such as shoe modification, orthoses, and injections are usually effective; surgery may be needed in resistant cases.
